Land at JFK or La Guardia and make a stop here, a few min. from Manhattan by taxi or metro. It is hosting cultural centres such as the PS 1 Contemporary Art Centre and the Planetarium and its view on NYC, and the Unisphere. Concerning the sport fans, they will prefer watching the "Mets" or the U.S. Open at Flushing Meadows.
